Eastern Market

We had the best weather this weekend. The 70 degree temperatures prompted anyone with a yard to do some spring cleaning which is exactly what we did all day Saturday.  We couldn’t have a weekend with all work and no play so on Sunday we took a break and took a jaunt to  Eastern Market.  Eastern Market is one of the few public markets left in Washington, DC, and they offer a large variety of fresh local fruits and vegetables, flowers, delicatessen, meat, cheese, poultry, bakery and dairy products. If you’re coming here for a visit, stop by Market Lunch and try their crab cakes and blueberry pancakes. Can you believe this market has been in continuous operation since 1873!    Just adjacent is the  Flea Market where you can hunt for  antiques and vintage finds. We love coming here on lazy Sundays to grab lunch at one of the quaint restaurants then walking about to have a look-see. Perhaps one of my favorites at the market this time around was the old printing press shop. I was immediately taken by the wooden numbers and letters which come in all shapes and sizes. Ooh and the old printing press silver design blocks-awesome!  I’m defintely going back to get the large letters. I just have to decide what word I want to spell out and where to put it.  What’s your word and where would you put it?

BTW- I discovered a very lovely Etsy shop at the market so stay tuned for a giveaway and shop feature!

Your photos have a way of making a flea market gorgeous! :-) I love the colorful shelves/doors with the old doorknobs. I found a great find at our Raleigh flea market. It was a100-yr-old, glass, amber clorox bottle. I brought it home & just put a few branches in it & it sits on my laundry room tub… looks totally cute for $3! For the letters, I would right “Inspire” and put it in my office. :-) Love your site! I’ll be back!

  2. The images remind me of Portabello Market in Notting Hill…I am so going miss treasure hunting there. I just adore the stamps. Looks like you all had the perfect time.

  3. LOVE it!! I want to go!!

Steph-I love “inspire”! I want to see a picture of that glass clorox bottle. I just adore old bottles.

  5. We lived in DC for a few years and I loved the eastern Market. We spent many a Sunday, strolling around, perusing the stands and grabbing a bite to eat. Thanks for the photos and the post – it all brought back some great memories..!

The turquios neckless on the left is to die for! How fabulous!

My word, hmmm….patience. I need quite a bit of it these days.

jdbremember-that looks like a turquoise necklace but they are actually single strands of beads. The strands look great layered don’t they? I’d wear it!

I have only been to Eastern Market once and didn’t think too much of it. I don’t really have the eye for antiques. But after seeing your pictures, I am considering visiting again!

Ditto re: Portobello look a like :-) I love sifting through vintage finds on a beautiful day – I’m totally jealous! Beautiful photos!

This market is incredible. If I move to DC for the summer, I will go. Sadly, San Diego doesn’t have anything like it. The best you can do at the flea market on the weekend is buy a used hammer.

    Brandi-You crack me up!

  12. Such beautiful photos & what a great find all that typography, I’m jealous. I couldn’t even decide what to write, I’d probably buy it for a million things. Can’t wait for the next etsy review!

  14. Love, love those pics! They are so wonderful and capture such beautiful images. I am married to a printer, so I love the type.

  16. Looks like some great finds there. I wish we had one of these places where I live in southern Utah. I would most likely use the word FAMILY and put it in my family room.
