Open Shelving

I have a section in my kitchen where I’d like to put open shelving. DH thinks it will make the kitchen look cluttered, I think it will make it look charming. What do you think?

A huge enthusiastic YES! to open shelving. I love every single one of these kitchens, but I think it’s really awesome we both drooled over that first kitchen in our posts today.

  2. Olivia says:

Love it. I don’t think it will look cluttered if you don’t crowd the shelves too much!

We have open shelving in our kitchen and it’s really nice. I had to go out and get new white dinnerware($17 on sale for a set of 4 at Pier 1) ,but it’s so worth it. Our cabinets are hideous dated just plain 80′s cream colored cabinets. Can’t afford new ones now so to change it up a bit we just took off two of the doors that show our dinnerware and glasses. It’s not cluttered looking at all. I love the look of open shelving.

I LOVE the idea of open shelving and I don’t think it will look cluttered at all, but what holds me back is the practical side of things. It gets dusty easily where we live and I don’t want the extra work of having to clean everything after AND before each use. We have glass cabinet doors… so I guess that’s as close to open shelving as I will get! LOL. :)

I love the idea of open shelving. We are planning on doing that in our kitchen. I feel like cupboards tend to close things in… If you have pretty dishes, why not display them and open up the kitchen?
    :)

  6. I love the idea of open shelving! I don’t have anywhere I could put them, but I wish I did!

Buckaroomama- i thought about the dust factor too so I’d be washing before each use. i don’t think i’d put my dailies up there, maybe just some nice servers, cake stands, etc. gotta convince dh how lovely this will make the kitchen look!

  8. Ashleigh says:

I’ve resisted the urge because of the whole dusting issue…It looks very lovely though, especially when done with a one color theme like white or tonals like yellow (love that one!)

I absolutely adore the idea of open shelving…but I think it’s the reality of them that trips me up. I worry about dust and dog hair and all that stuff!! I’m convinced I’d have to wash everything again before I used it :)

I love the look of the open shelves but I must agree, I would have to dust all the time and wash each plate/dish everytime I take it off the shelf and need to use it. Maybe for things that don’t get used often? I love the look of a single colour (like yellow or green or blue) on these shelves to really make a white kitchen pop!

  11. I adore open shelving, so a big yes from me!! We have open shelving in our kitchen and at first I was worried about dust and clutter but I have to say we haven’t had either problem. There are only a few pieces that I have to wash before using but they are large serving pieces we don’t get to use often which is why they end up collecting dust quite literally. And as for clutter, it really depends on what your dish collection is like. We have dishes that are all shades of the same color (white and cream) so it is pretty easy for it to look tidy even though everything is out in the open.
    I say go for it!!

  12. Charming, charming, charming :-) I love open shelving in kitchens, it gives them life, soul and character. There! Thanks for your lovely comments on my blog, I’m glad to be back in blog land and making the rounds catching up with everybody. Love from London x

I’m so into the open shelving idea. Our kitchen is a tiny eenie meenie kitchen so we hung up a shelf for some of the random stuff that wouldn’t fit into the cabinet. I bought some nice looking jars from Ikea and the shelf looks pretty darn good and not at all cluttered (I mean, all things considered). I say go for it and good luck convincing!

I love open shelving too. I think it depends on the style of your kitchen. Also if you are a neat-nic or tend to have clutter. Also, the things you’d put out would have to be somewhat attractive or at least match. I don’t think I own enough “pretty” things to put on display!

i love shelving! i just don’t like the constant dusting of the shelves and the items on the shelves. : )

  16. Lisa says:

I love the idea of open shelves but you must keep it neat. Keep in mind also whatever you put on those shelves would probably need to be dusted regularly? I’m always thinking of cleaning haha. But I love it.

  17. I love it!!! i would love to do it with a nice set of wine and cocktail glasses i have a some nice all white china… usually things i don’t use much to avoid it looking messy… have fun with it!

I like open shelves, and I think you totally have the eye to pull it off!

  22. We have open shelving & I LOVE it! It really opens up our cramped kitchen and helps us keep the shelves neat and orderly….because we have to! I would wholeheartedly recommend you give it a try!

  23. G. says:

yes, yes, yes to open shelving!!!

  24. Becky says:

I really like the open shelf. I wish I had enough room to do something like that in my kitchen. BTW – thanks for reminding me I had a ziplock full of crayon pieces in a drawer with your last post. We finally got around to making some crayons this week! Just posted some pics.
